The purity test started life as a college icebreaker and turned into the internet's favorite way to work out who has actually lived a bit. Here's how ours works, and what that number at the end is really telling you.

What is the purity test?

The purity test is a self-scored questionnaire that measures how much of life's messier side you've already been through. You answer honestly, one question at a time, and you finish with a number between 0 and 100. A hundred means you've done none of it. Zero means there's not much left to try.

It started at Rice University in the 1980s, handed out during orientation week so new students could bond over what they had and hadn't done. The idea goes back further than that, actually. The campus paper, the Rice Thresher, ran an early version in 1924. The format everyone copies today arrived decades later, escaped the campus, and became a social media fixture. Every clone you've seen since, Griffor and the innocence test included, traces back to that same list.

How does the purity test work?

You work through the questions and answer yes or no. Every yes costs you points, and your score falls from 100 as you go. Simple enough. What's different here is that the test listens to your answers instead of handing everyone the same list.

Questions come in chains. Each chain opens with something easy, and it only digs deeper if you say yes. Never touched a drink? The whole drinking ladder disappears, and you'll never get asked about blackouts. Two people can take this test and have completely different experiences of it, which is kind of the point. How is your purity score calculated?

These bands are ours, tuned to the way this test weights its questions, so they won't line up with the ranges you've seen on other purity tests. A low number isn't a warning and a high one isn't a compliment.

What is a good purity test score?

There isn't one, and that's the honest answer. A high score means you've done less, a low score means you've done more, and neither end wins anything. Treating it as a competition misses what the test is for, which is arguing about it afterwards.

If you want numbers anyway, the classic version is usually quoted with an average somewhere around 63. Age moves it more than anything else. Teenagers tend to sit in the 80s, first-year students cluster in the 70s, and by the end of university most people have drifted into the 55 to 70 range, simply because they've had more time. A 50 feels low at eighteen and completely unremarkable at twenty-five.

The six areas you get scored on

One number can only tell you so much, so your answers get tracked across six separate areas. You get a breakdown showing where you actually lost your purity, the area you scored hardest on, and an archetype that sums the whole thing up.

Someone can finish on 60 because they drink like a fish. Someone else can finish on 60 because of absolutely everything except that. Same score, completely different person.

How do you play the purity test with friends?

Most guides treat this as something you do alone on your phone, which was never the idea. It was a group activity from day one, and in our experience it's still better as one. Everyone answers privately, then you compare at the end. Three versions worth trying:

Read it out loud

One person reads each question while everyone else answers on their own phone. Nobody says what they ticked. At the end you compare final scores and nothing else.

Works best with four to ten people who already know each other a bit. The fun was never the number anyway. It's the pause before someone answers, and the "wait, who does that?" that comes right after.

Drink for every yes

One sip per yes. Keep the sips small, because this gets away from people faster than they expect. Sticking to a single area keeps everyone upright.

There's a better version, though. Bet on each other. Call someone's answer out loud before they give it, and if you're right they drink. Wrong, and you do.

Pick one area and go hard

Choose a single area and play only that one. Screens for a group that barely knows each other, Substances or Sex for people who won't flinch. It turns the whole thing into a five-minute round.

This is also how you get the hard or spicy version of the test. The Sex and Substances areas hold the crudest questions of the lot, and nothing says you have to play the rest.

How is this different from the Rice Purity Test and Griffor?

The classic list was written before smartphones existed. It has nothing to say about dating apps, sexting, vaping, fake IDs, or most of what actually gets people into trouble now, and it hands everyone identical questions whether they apply or not. The clones that followed, Griffor included, mostly reprinted it with fresh paint.

This one branches instead. Every answer is weighted by how rare it is, so two people with the same confessions can still finish far apart. And you walk away with six area scores and an archetype rather than one bare number.

What to do with your result

Compare it. The score on its own is just a number, and it only gets interesting sitting next to someone else's. The archetype is usually where the arguing starts, because people recognise themselves in it more than they'd like to admit.

We've found the breakdown gets more of a reaction than the score does. Nobody's shocked to be a 58. They are shocked to find out which area got them there.

Ground rules before you start

Answer honestly, even if you never show anyone. The whole thing falls apart when people play it safe, and the scores stop being funny. That said, you're never obliged to share yours, and nobody should be pushed into it. Some people love comparing, some don't, and both are fine.

Keep it in proportion, too. A high score doesn't make someone boring and a low one doesn't make them a disaster. It's a party game, and it works best when everyone treats it like one.
